I am writing this around 4 am on Sunday, August 14th, 2022.
Some rare optimism!
If you’re reading this from a future where YouTube still exists, here’s a video from Hank Green about this week’s massive Climate Change bill that actually has me slightly hopeful that we will use this brief window before things are irreversibly terrible to make things not irreversibly terrible.
If you’re reading this from some distant future, I really fucking hope it’s one where we’ve averted the worst future of Global Warming.
(Random minor pessimism: if humans do come together and do a shitload of work to avoid the worst effects of global warming, I 100% guarantee that there will be assholes saying “See! Global warming was a hoax and they were just trying to scare you and there was no need to do all that work!”, exactly like what happened with Y2K and the hole in the ozone layer. I suspect you’ll see the exact same thing if you manage to cure cancer or make peace with the mutant cockroach armies.)

In other mildly optimistic news, the FBI search of former President Trump’s golf resort home for the massive collection of top secret and classified info he stole from the White House and was illegally storing and quite possibly sharing with who the fuck knows looks like it might actually bring some consequences to a man who has managed to entirely avoid them thanks to racist assholes shielding him.
The last six years have been an endless parade of “surely This Terrible Thing will be thing to bring down Trump!” I can remember clearly thinking in 2016 that there’s no way in hell he could win the election after the “grab them by the pussy” audio came out, but never underestimate how evil and shitty American voters can be.
Dude was impeached twice, is obviously evil, stupid, and corrupt, and right now it’s entirely possible he becomes President in 2024 and proceeds to absolutely destroy American Democracy.
Even if he doesn’t die in prison on Espionage charges, this week might at least lead to him being legally unable to hold office again. I don’t know, I’ve long ago given up on the idea that Trump and his cronies will face any consequences. But maybe the worst can be averted.
